Inspired by Flaws
ARTIST STATEMENT
My name is Charmaine Vegas, a metalsmith crafting under the studio name Bless the Theory, in Long Beach, California. Through my work in jewelry and metalwork, I endeavor to weave a narrative that reflects the intricacies of the human experience and the raw beauty inherent in the natural world surrounding us. The essence of my creations lies in the deliberate celebration of life's imperfections—a visual ode to the untamed beauty found in every nuance.
Predominantly working in sterling silver with gold accents, I incorporate pearls and precious gemstones to infuse each piece with symbolic depth. A distinctive hallmark within my work is an intuitively hand-sawed or engraved fissure. These cracks speak to the beauty I find in imperfection, often translated into representations of flaws, veins, roots, paths, lightning strikes, and other features reminiscent of life and nature.
RECENT WORK
In my recent and continually evolving body of work, I delve into the theory and practice of letting go—an exploration of its meaning, process, and the transformative benefits it yields. Drawing inspiration from nature's seasonal rituals and paralleling it with the insightful journey within humanity, I use the Oak leaf as a symbol of physical shedding. The sawn or engraved veins serve as a symbolic representation of the transformative path. Pearls, become a metaphor for the gift of letting go—regrowth and newfound wisdom emerging from the act of release.
LOOKING FORWARD
As I continue to evolve as an artist, my journey extends towards a deeper exploration of "letting-go," delving into the theories and practices surrounding resistance and acceptance. I aim to examine their manifestations both in nature and the human experience, then produce a body of work that speaks to the profoundness of embracing change.
